The Health Edge: Inflammation Part 1, The Causes

In this first of a two-part series Mark reviews why we have an inflammatory response and how it becomes disrupted on a chronic basis. Dr. Mark!!!
Brillant and thank you! I sent this podcast to 4 people already this morning!

I am excited to listen to part 2 of this series. Recently on the BBC News, August 24th 2016, it was reported GlaxoSmithKline’s immuno-inflammation lab was working on developing new molecules to treat inflammatory disorders. The article was entitled, Depression: A Revolution in Treatment and followed up by a BBC segment, The Inflamed Mind.

I thought possibly this was a propaganda stunt by a drug company. Free publicity to link depression to already sold pharmaceuticals for rheumatoid arthritis, but is depression linked to inflammation?

Thanks Allissa! There is abundant research suggesting inflammation as a major driver of depression. These “cytokines” that can be produced in response to so many triggers are now known to cross the blood-brain-barrier (previously thought not possible) and activate the brain’s unique immune “glial cells”. This is seen in PTSD, Depression, autism spectrum, Alzheimer’s, etc. In the Mind, Mood, and Food link on our web site menu, there is a PowerPoint Presentation for health care professionals I reviewed on this incredible connection.
      Very best!
      Mark
